I Am Thirsty

Evidence that Jesus understands my pain

Hebrews 4:14-16 (NIV)

14  Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has gone through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to the faith we profess.

15  For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are--yet was without sin.

16  Let us then approach the throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.

Illustrates Jesus faithfulness to the mission

Psalm 42:1-2 – “As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for you, O God. My soul thirsts for God, for the living God.”

John 4:13-14 (NIV)

13  Jesus answered, "Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again,

14  but whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life."

Fulfills messianic prophesies

John 19:28 (NIV)

28  Later, knowing that all was now completed, and so that the Scripture would be fulfilled, Jesus said, "I am thirsty."

Psalm 69:21 (NIV)

21 They put gall in my food and gave me vinegar for my thirst.

Reminds us of Jesus ongoing thirst

2 Corinthians 5:21 (ESV)

21 For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.

John 3:16 (ESV)

16 “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.

Reminds Us Of Jesus Ongoing Thirst

I Timothy 2:3-4 (L.B.) “For He LONGS for all to be saved and to understand this truth: That God is on one side and all the people on the other side, and Christ Jesus, himself man, is between them to bring them together, by giving his life for all mankind.”

Revelation 3:20 (Msg.) – “Look at me. I stand at the door. I knock. If you hear me call and open the door, I’ll come right in and sit down to supper with you.”
