You Can't Have Both

Law vs. Grace

YOU CAN'T HAVE BOTH

dAN MCNAMARA

Adam & Eve

Gen.2:17 but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.(KJV)

Abraham

Gen.17:4 “This is my covenant with you: I will make you the father of a multitude of nations! 5)What’s more, I am changing your name. It will no longer be Abram. Instead, you will be called Abraham,6)I will make you extremely fruitful. Your descendants will become many nations, and kings will be among them!

7)“I will confirm my covenant with you and your descendants after you, from generation to generation. This is the everlasting covenant: I will always be your God and the God of your descendants after you. 8And I will give the entire land of Canaan, where you now live as a foreigner, to you and your descendants. It will be their possession forever, and I will be their God.”

Moses

Ex.31:18 And he gave unto Moses, when he had made an end of communing with him upon mount Sinai, two tables of testimony, tables of stone, written with the finger of God.

Ex.32:1 When they came near the camp, Moses saw the calf and the dancing, and he burned with anger. He threw the stone tablets to the ground, smashing them at the foot of the mountain. (NLT)

Ex.32:27-28 (NLT) Moses told them, “This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: Each of you, take your swords and go back and forth from one end of the camp to the other. Kill everyone—even your brothers, friends, and neighbors.” 28)The Levites obeyed Moses’ command, and about 3,000 people died that day.

Grace, Spirit, Mercy and Freedom

Rom.8: 3The law of Moses was unable to save us because of the weakness of our sinful nature. So God did what the law could not do. He sent his own Son in a body like the bodies we sinners have. And in that body God declared an end to sin’s control over us by giving his Son as a sacrifice for our sins. 4)He did this so that the just requirement of the law would be fully satisfied for us, who no longer follow our sinful nature but instead follow the Spirit.

Rom.8:6) So letting your sinful nature control your mind leads to death. But letting the Spirit control your mind leads to life and peace. 7)For the sinful nature is always hostile to God. It never did obey God’s laws, and it never will.

Rom.8:10 And Christ lives within you, so even though your body will die because of sin, the Spirit gives you life because you have been made right with God. 11)The Spirit of God, who raised Jesus from the dead, lives in you. And just as God raised Christ Jesus from the dead, he will give life to your mortal bodies by this same Spirit living within you.

IT is the spirit that lives in you, not the law

Gal.2:1Then fourteen years later I went back to Jerusalem again, this time with Barnabas; and Titus came along, too.

Gal.2:7 Instead, they saw that God had given me the responsibility of preaching the gospel to the Gentiles, just as he had given Peter the responsibility of preaching to the Jews. 8)For the same God who worked through Peter as the apostle to the Jews also worked through me as the apostle to the Gentiles.

Gal.2:11But when Peter came to Antioch, I had to oppose him to his face, for what he did was very wrong. 12)When he first arrived, he ate with the Gentile believers, who were not circumcised. But afterward, when some friends of James came, Peter wouldn’t eat with the Gentiles anymore. He was afraid of criticism from these people who insisted on the necessity of circumcision.

Gal.5:25 Since we are living by the Spirit, let us follow the Spirit’s leading in every part of our lives.
