Choosing The Right Guide For My Life

Choosing Your Future: Part 2

Choosing the right guide for my life

17 Some of his disciples said to one another, "What does he mean by saying, 'In a little while you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me,' and 'Because I am going to the Father'?" John 16:17 (NIV)

13 But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come. John 16:13 (NIV)

Jesus: “The Father will give you another HELPER who will be with you forever! That Helper is the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it doesn't see or know him. But you know him, because he lives with you and will be in you.” John 14:16-17 (GW)

WAYS THE HOLY SPIRIT WANTS TO HELP YOU EVERYDAY

HE WANTS TO HELP ME . . .

KNOW WHAT I NEED TO KNOW

“When the Spirit of Truth comes, he will lead you into all Truth.” John 16:13 (NCV)

GET WHERE I NEED TO GO

SAY THE RIGHT THINGS

“The Holy Spirit led David TO SAY...” Mark 12:36 (CEV)

“...do not worry about what to say or how to say it. At that time you will be given what to say, for it will not be you speaking, but the Spirit of your Father speaking through you.” Matthew 10:19-20 (NIV)

WAIT FOR GOD’S PERFECT TIMING

“We are led by the Spirit TO WAIT in the confident hope of righteousness through faith.” Galatians 5:5 (NJB)

RESIST THINGS I CAN’T NORMALLY RESIST

16 So I say, live by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the sinful nature. Galatians 5:16 (NIV)

“The desires of self-indulgence are always in opposition to the Spirit, and the desires of the Spirit are in opposition to your self-indulgence...which keep you prevented from doing the things that you want to. But when you are led by the Spirit, you are not in bondage to the Law.”   Galatians 5:17-18 (NJB)

AVOID DANGERS & MISTAKES

“I praise the Lord, because he guides me, and in the night my conscience warns me.” Psalm 16:7 (TEV)

“The Holy Spirit warned Paul not to go to Jerusalem.” Acts 21:4 (NCV)

HOW DOES THE HOLY SPIRIT GUIDE?

1.   BY REVEALING THE MEANING OF WHAT HE’S SAID

“The man without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him, and he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually discerned.”  1 Corinthians 2:14 (NIV)

2.   BY REMINDING US OF WHAT HE’S SAID

“The Helper will teach you everything and will cause you to remember all that I told you. This Helper is the Holy Spirit...”         John 14:26 (NCV)

3.   BY GIVING US NUDGES & CONFIRMATIONS

“God’s Spirit touches our spirits and confirms who we really are.” Romans 8:16 (MSG)

STEPS TO BEING LED

1.    PAUSE & BE QUIET

“Be still, and know that I am God.” Psalm 37:7 (NIV)

“In quietness and confidence will be your strength.” Isaiah 30:15 (KJV)

2.    HUMBLY ASK THE HOLY SPIRIT TO GUIDE YOU

“God guides the humble in what is right and teaches them his way.” Psalm 25:9 (NIV)

“Teach me, Lord, what you want me to do, and lead me down the right path.”

Psalm 27:11 (TEV)

3.    BE WILLING TO DO WHAT HE SAYS

“Whoever is willing to do what God wants and chooses it will know if what I teach comes from God.”        John 7:17 (TEV)

4.    LOOK TO GOD’S WORD

“Your Word is a lamp to guide me, and a light for my path.” Psalm 119:105

“Guide my steps by your word, so I will not be overcome by any evil.” Psalm 119:133 (NLT)

5.    EXPECT HIS GUIDANCE IN FAITH

“If you want to know what God really wants you to do, ask him, and he will gladly tell you, for he is always ready to give a bountiful supply of wisdom to all who ask him; but...be sure that you really expect him to tell you... If you don’t ask in faith, don’t expect the Lord to give you any solid answer.” James 1:5-6 (LB)

6.    WAIT FOR GOD’S RESPONSE

“God does speak – sometimes one way and sometimes another – even though people may not understand it.” Job 33:14 (NCV)
