Malachi 3:6–12
A Call to Faithful Stewardship
Malachi 3:6 “For I the Lord do not change; therefore you, O children of Jacob, are not consumed. 7 From the days of your fathers you have turned aside from my statutes and have not kept them. Return to me, and I will return to you, says the Lord of hosts. But you say, ‘How shall we return?’ 8 Will man rob God? Yet you are robbing me. But you say, ‘How have we robbed you?’ In your tithes and contributions. 9 You are cursed with a curse, for you are robbing me, the whole nation of you. 10 Bring the full tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. And thereby put me to the test, says the Lord of hosts, if I will not open the windows of heaven for you and pour down for you a blessing until there is no more need. 11 I will rebuke the devourer[a] for you, so that it will not destroy the fruits of your soil, and your vine in the field shall not fail to bear, says the Lord of hosts. 12 Then all nations will call you blessed, for you will be a land of delight, says the Lord of hosts.
I. The Tithe Is the Minimum
- Malachi 3:8 – “Will a man rob God? Yet you are robbing Me!”
- The tithe means one-tenth. It’s the starting point of generosity.
- Leviticus 27:30, Proverbs 3:9–10
- Tithing is not emotional—it’s obedient and trusting.
- Are we giving God our best or our leftovers?
II. The Curse Came from Disobedience
- Malachi 3:9 – “You are suffering under a curse…”
- Disobedience in giving affects the whole community.
- Deuteronomy 28:15, Galatians 3:13
- Christ redeemed us from the curse, but obedience still matters.
- Partial obedience is no obedience.
III. The Storehouse Represents God’s Work
- Malachi 3:10 – “Bring the full tenth into the storehouse…”
- The storehouse funded ministry, helped the poor, and maintained worship.
- Nehemiah 10:38, 1 Corinthians 9:13–14, Deuteronomy 14:22–23
- Giving puts God first in our lives.
- God’s plan was never bingo or raffles—it was faithful giving.
IV. The Test Challenges God to Bless
- Malachi 3:10 – “Test Me in this way…”
- God invites us to trust Him with our finances.
- 2 Corinthians 9:6–8, Luke 6:38
- If we trust God with eternity, we can trust Him with our finances.
- Giving is an act of faith.
V. The Blessings Are Out of This World
- Malachi 3:10 – “I will open the floodgates of heaven…”
- God promises blessings beyond measure.
- Philippians 4:19, Psalm 37:25
- You can’t out-give God. His hand is bigger. His shovel is bigger.
