The Gospel of Matthew
They "Cried Out"
Matthew 20:29–34 (NLT)
29 As Jesus and the disciples left the town of Jericho, a large crowd followed behind. 30 Two blind men were sitting beside the road. When they heard that Jesus was coming that way, they began shouting, “Lord, Son of David, have mercy on us!”
31 “Be quiet!” the crowd yelled at them.
But they only shouted louder, “Lord, Son of David, have mercy on us!”
32 When Jesus heard them, he stopped and called, “What do you want me to do for you?”
33 “Lord,” they said, “we want to see!” 34 Jesus felt sorry for them and touched their eyes. Instantly they could see! Then they followed him.
Matthew 7:7–8 (NLT)
7 “Keep on asking, and you will receive what you ask for. Keep on seeking, and you will find. Keep on knocking, and the door will be opened to you. 8 For everyone who asks, receives. Everyone who seeks, finds. And to everyone who knocks, the door will be opened.
Luke 18:2–8 (NLT)
2 “There was a judge in a certain city,” he said, “who neither feared God nor cared about people. 3 A widow of that city came to him repeatedly, saying, ‘Give me justice in this dispute with my enemy.’ 4 The judge ignored her for a while, but finally he said to himself, ‘I don’t fear God or care about people, 5 but this woman is driving me crazy. I’m going to see that she gets justice, because she is wearing me out with her constant requests!’ ”
6 Then the Lord said, “Learn a lesson from this unjust judge. 7 Even he rendered a just decision in the end. So don’t you think God will surely give justice to his chosen people who cry out to him day and night? Will he keep putting them off? 8 I tell you, he will grant justice to them quickly! But when the Son of Man returns, how many will he find on the earth who have faith?”
Matthew 15:28 (NLT)
28 “Dear woman,” Jesus said to her, “your faith is great. Your request is granted.” And her daughter was instantly healed.
Genesis 32:24–26 (NLT)
24 This left Jacob all alone in the camp, and a man came and wrestled with him until the dawn began to break. 25 When the man saw that he would not win the match, he touched Jacob’s hip and wrenched it out of its socket. 26 Then the man said, “Let me go, for the dawn is breaking!”
But Jacob said, “I will not let you go unless you bless me.”
1. THE SITUATION
"did not come to be served, but to serve,
and to give His life a ransom for many" (Matthew 20:28).
2. THE SIGHTLESS MEN.
"And behold two 2 blind men sitting by the road . . ."
Amazing Grace, how sweet the sound,
That saved a wretch like me . . .
I once was lost but now am found,
3. THE SAVIOR.
"So Jesus stood still . . ." (v. 32a).
"called to them" (v. 32b).
"What do you want Me to do for you?" (v. 32c).
"Jesus had compassion" (v. 34).
"immediately, their eyes received sight" (v. 34b)
- Jesus will listen
- Jesus will ask what we want. Be specific
- Jesus will respond with compassion
- Jesus will answer our prayer
4. THE LESSONS.
FIRST, we should learn from these two blind men is that we should never be ashamed to admit how disparately we need Jesus.
SECOND, we should learn that Jesus is abundantly merciful to every one of us
THIRD, we should follow their example in their asking.
