Matthew 4

Temptation

The Gospel of Matthew

Temptation

James 1:14 You are tempted by the evil things you want. Your own desire leads you away and traps you. Your desire grows inside you until it results in sin.

1. THE HOLY SPIRIT LEADS JESUS TO THE WILDERNESS

Matthew 4:1-2 Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. And when He had fasted forty days and forty nights, afterward He was hungry.

Hebrews 2:18 (ESV) — 18 For because he himself has suffered

when tempted, he is able to help those who are being tempted.

Hebrews 4:15 (ESV) — 15 For we do not have a high priest who is

unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who

in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin.

  • Satan is the Tempter and Accuser
  • Satan Attacks When You’re At Your Weakest
  • Satan’s Attacks Can Be Harder and Longer Than Expected

He learned obedience through the things which He suffered (Hebrews 5:8).

2. TEMPTATION #1: THE LUST OF THE FLESH

Matthew 4 :3-4 Now when the tempter came to Him, he said, “If You are the Son of God, command that these stones become bread.” But He answered and said, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.’”

The Tempter WILL Come

Satan’s Arguments Will Seem Logical

Satan’s Request Will Seem Advantageous and Doable

Jesus Knew and Understood God’s Word

3. TEMPTATION #2: THE PRIDE OF LIFE.

Matthew 4:(5-7) Then the devil took Him up into the holy city, set Him on the pinnacle of the temple, and said to Him, “If You are the Son of God, throw Yourself down. For it is written:

‘He shall give His angels charge over you,’

and,‘In their hands they shall bear you up,

Lest you dash your foot against a stone.’”

Jesus said to him, “It is written again, ‘You shall not tempt the LORD your God.’”

Satan knows how to use your pride

Satan Knows God’s Word

It is written again, “You shall not tempt the LORD your God.”

4. TEMPTATION #3: LUST OF THE EYES.

Matthew 4:8-10 Again, the devil took Him up on an exceedingly high mountain, and showed Him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory. And he said to Him, “All these things I will give You if You will fall down and worship me.” Then Jesus said to him, “Away with you, Satan! For it is written, ‘You shall worship the LORD your God, and Him only you shall serve.’”

Satan Can Offer You Things

I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God; I will also sit on the mount of the congregation on the farthest sides of the north; I will ascend above the heights of the clouds, I will be like the Most High. (Isaiah 14:13-14)

Away with you, Satan! For it is written:

5. THE DEVIL LEAVES AND ANGELS COME TO JESUS.

Matthew 4:11 Then the devil left Him, and behold, angels came and ministered to Him.

Then the devil left Him

  • Temptation #1 – Money
  • Temptation #2 – Sex
  • Temptation #3 – Pride
  • Temptation #4 – Envy
  • Temptation #5 – Lust

But I say, walk habitually in the [Holy] Spirit [seek Him and be responsive to His guidance], and then you will certainly not carry out the desire of the sinful nature [which responds impulsively without regard for God and His precepts]. – Galatians 5:16 (AMP)
