Don't Judge Me

The Gospel of Matthew

Don't Judge Me

Matthew 7:1 (NLT)

“Do not judge others, and you will not be judged.

•  “Before you judge someone, walk a mile in his shoes.”

•  “Don’t judge everyone else by your own limited experience.”

•   “Be curious, not judgmental.”

•   “Don’t judge a man by where he is, because you don’t know how far he has come.”

•   "Don’t judge me by my past. I don’t live there anymore.”

•   “Only God can judge me.”

•   No one should judge what I’ve done with my life, not unless they’ve been in my shoes every horrible day and every sleepless night.”

•   “Don’t judge anyone but don’t trust anyone.”

•   “People are going to judge you anyway, so you might as well do what you want.”

•   “It is the Holy Spirit’s job to convict, God’s job to judge and my job to love.”

Matthew 7:1–12 (NLT)

“Do not judge others, and you will not be judged. 2 For you will be treated as you treat others. The standard you use in judging is the standard by which you will be judged.

3 “And why worry about a speck in your friend’s eye when you have a log in your own? 4 How can you think of saying to your friend, ‘Let me help you get rid of that speck in your eye,’ when you can’t see past the log in your own eye? 5 Hypocrite! First get rid of the log in your own eye; then you will see well enough to deal with the speck in your friend’s eye.

6 “Don’t waste what is holy on people who are unholy. Don’t throw your pearls to pigs! They will trample the pearls, then turn and attack you.

Effective Prayer

7 “Keep on asking, and you will receive what you ask for. Keep on seeking, and you will find. Keep on knocking, and the door will be opened to you. 8 For everyone who asks, receives. Everyone who seeks, finds. And to everyone who knocks, the door will be opened.

9 “You parents—if your children ask for a loaf of bread, do you give them a stone instead? 10 Or if they ask for a fish, do you give them a snake? Of course not! 11 So if you sinful people know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give good gifts to those who ask him.

The Golden Rule

12 “Do to others whatever you would like them to do to you. This is the essence of all that is taught in the law and the prophets.

LOOK DEEPER

11 So if you sinful people know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give good gifts to those who ask him

LOOK IN THE MIRROR

Matthew 7:3–5 (NLT)

3 “And why worry about a speck in your friend’s eye when you have a log in your own? 4 How can you think of saying to your friend, ‘Let me help you get rid of that speck in your eye,’ when you can’t see past the log in your own eye? 5 Hypocrite! First get rid of the log in your own eye; then you will see well enough to deal with the speck in your friend’s eye.

 Matthew 7:11 (NLT)

11 So if you sinful people know how to give good gifts to your children,

how much more will your heavenly Father give good gifts to those who ask him.

LOOK THROUGH THE BINNOCULARS

Proverbs 9:7–8 (NLT)

7 Anyone who rebukes a mocker will get an insult in return.

Anyone who corrects the wicked will get hurt.

8 So don’t bother correcting mockers;

they will only hate you.

But correct the wise,

and they will love you.

Steps to Take

  • See the log in your own eye
  • Remove it. Repent of your sin
  • See the speck in your brother’s eye
  • Remove it. Take the speck out.!

Leviticus 19:17 (NLT)

17 “Do not nurse hatred in your heart for any of your relatives.

Confront people directly so you will not be held guilty for their sin.

Matthew 18:15 (NLT)

15 “If another believer sins against you, go privately and point out the offense. If the other person listens and confesses it, you have won that person back.

1 Corinthians 13:4–7 (NLT)

4 Love is patient and kind. Love is not jealous or boastful or proud 5 or rude. It does not demand its own way. It is not irritable, and it keeps no record of being wronged. 6 It does not rejoice about injustice but rejoices whenever the truth wins out. 7 Love never gives up, never loses faith, is always hopeful, and endures through every circumstance.

LOOK FOR GUIDANCE

James 1:5–6 (NLT)

5 If you need wisdom, ask our generous God, and he will give it to you. He will not rebuke you for asking. 6 But when you ask him, be sure that your faith is in God alone. Do not waver, for a person with divided loyalty is as unsettled as a wave of the sea that is blown and tossed by the wind.

CONCLUSION

1) Do not disregard context when reading this scripture.

2) Use Holy Spirit lead discernment.

3) Biblical truth is objective, eternal, and inseparable from God’s character.

4) The command not to judge others does not mean there should be no mechanism for dealing with sin.

“Stop judging by mere appearances, but instead judge correctly” (John 7:24).

5) Superficial judgment is wrong.

6) Hypocritical judgment is wrong.

7) Self-righteous judgment is wrong.

8) Untrue judgment is wrong.

9) Christians are often accused of “judging” or intolerance when they speak out against sin. But opposing sin is not wrong.

10) Believers are warned against judging others unfairly or unrighteously, but Jesus commends “right judgment” (John 7:24, ESV)
